An Italian story since 1890
Ernst August and Maria Zuech - the origin of the Zuegg surname - began cultivating fruit on their farm in Lana d'Adige, together with their 14 children. The family started selling apples in neighboring markets, and before long, their business reached as far as St. Petersburg.
Karl and Vigil, the two eldest sons, took over the small family business and turned it into a modern company, despite the hardships brought on by the outbreak of World War I.
In 1917, in Laces near Bolzano, the company began processing fruit, starting with early experiments to produce apple preserves. Full-scale production didn't begin until 1923 - but it was an immediate success, and the superior quality of Zuegg's preserves helped the company win over markets across Northern Italy.
In the 1950s, Il Fruttino was born: a solid quince jam cake, enriched with vitamins, designed to replace "bread, butter, and sugar" as a children's snack across Italy. Today it's also available in blueberry and citrus fruits, and remains a great energy snack to take wherever you go.
In the early 1960s, Zuegg created Frutta Viva: a preserve made without artificial preservatives or colorings. In 1962, a new factory opened in Verona, beginning production of semi-finished fruit-based products.
Zuegg opened a new production facility surrounded by nature in Avellino, where fruit is collected, carefully inspected, selected, and transformed into purée or frozen cubes.
For the first time, part of production moved abroad, to Werneuchen near Berlin. The new facility took over the production of semi-finished products for Northern European markets.
In 2001, Zuegg acquired a German factory in Zörbig, near Leipzig, to produce preserves and syrups under both the Zuegg and Zörbiger trademarks. In 2002, the company purchased a facility in Elne, France, to produce semi-finished products for the French, Spanish, and Portuguese markets.
Zuegg Austria GmbH was founded in Graz to market Zuegg products across Austria and Eastern Europe. That same year, a new factory opened in Afanasevo, Russia, to produce semi-finished products.
To stay closer to customers and consumers, Zuegg opened new commercial offices in the Canton of Graubünden, Switzerland - an ideal crossroads between the Italian market and Northern Europe.
After more than 20 years off air, Zuegg returned with an institutional ad telling the story of the company, along with two commercials marking the redesign of its classic jams under the name "I Frutteti di Oswald". Oswald Zuegg became the voice - though never the face - of the campaign.
